Biodiversity
The range of animals and plants on our planet.
Conservation
The preservation of species.
Species
A taxonomic unit, representing a group of living organisms
consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes
or interbreeding.
Threatened with
Extinction
Referring to any animal that is listed as vulnerable or worse
on the IUCN Red List.
IUCN Red List
The world’s most comprehensive inventory of the global
conservation status of species, assessing their risk of
extinction and guiding conservation e昀昀orts.
Healthy
population
Consists or healthy individuals (i.e., absence of disease) that
are part of a stable and self-sustaining population that is
genetically diverse.

de昀椀ned population role, and potential conservation impact.
Direct
conservation role
A population that functions as an ark, insurance or rescue
population, or is vital for ex situ conservation research or
conservation education.
Conservation
education
Raises awareness and informs, to connect people to nature
and encourage sustainable behaviours. Moving beyond
informing, towards inspiring to act.
Environmental
sustainability
Moving towards an equilibrium between consumerist
human culture and the living world, by acting in a way that
doesn’t waste or unnecessarily deplete natural resources.
Conservation
science
Applied research that will bene昀椀t conservation of species
and habitats, and addresses speci昀椀c questions essential for
success of the overall Conservation Strategy for the species.
Nature
connectedness
The extent to which individuals include nature as part of
their identity.
