RECYCLING OLD IT EQUIPMENT

In Summer 2025 we introduced new guest facing recycling bins across the
zoo, to encourage recycling. This was a positive step forward and we will take
further measures in 2026 to improve our guest awareness. In December
2025 we joined forces with a local refuse company called Briers. They
bring a wealth of experience and a shared passion for sustainability. We
will introduce new signage to tell the story of our new partnership with
Briers and what happens to their waste and where it goes. This will engage
guests in the process and encourage them to recycle more frequently. We
also aim to make it even easier for guests with larger recycling bins available
in peak picnic spots across the zoo.

In 2025, Twycross organised a comprehensive Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) collection to responsibly manage equipment that had
reached the end of its usable life. Through this initiative, we processed 35
computers, 14 printers, 22 peripherals, 6 servers, 10 switches, 9 laptops,
24 hard drives, and 31 additional pieces of equipment, including monitors,
phones, and access points.
WEEE collection ensures electronic equipment is disposed of safely, responsibly, and with minimal
environmental impact. WEEE regulations are designed to address one of the fastest-growing waste
streams worldwide by ensuring that harmful components—such as heavy metals, plastics, chemical
residues, and other non-biodegradable materials—are prevented from entering natural ecosystems.
Instead of being sent to land昀椀ll, our outdated IT equipment is channelled through an accredited recycling
partner who have a 0% land昀椀ll policy and use Environment Agency-approved processes for refurbishing,
repairing, or fully recycling WEEE equipment. Our partner either refurbishes or dismantles, sorts, and
processes each item in line with these strict standards which allows the recovery valuable materials such
as metals, wiring, and plastics that can be used again in the creation of new products.
