This year was the 昀椀rst full year of implementation of our new three-year
project with the Borneo Nature Foundation (BNF). This project aims to
create a “Conservation Generation”, delivering education, engagement, and
outreach activities to communities around the Sebanngau National Park
to foster a knowledgeable, motivated generation, equipped to
make a di昀昀erence, with a lifelong commitment to conservation.
The activities undertaken aim to engage local people with local
wildlife and inspire the next generation of conservationists,
turning awareness into action for sustainability and rainforest
protection, with a particular focus on the 昀氀agship species; the
Critically Endangered Bornean orangutan.
In 2025, 445 people were reached through education sessions in schools and community groups. In
addition to this, 553 people took part in education activities during the annual Festival Anak Sebangau.

During the festival, BNF also launched their new children’s book, “Aku
Yang Paling Penting (I am the Most Important)”. This book was created
in collaboration with Twycross Zoo, with Andy Prince contributing all
of the illustrations. This book highlights the role of key animals in
the Sebangau landscape, is now being used in the education sessions
delivered by BNF.

We have worked with BNF to help develop robust monitoring and evaluation methods, which will show
the fundamental link between these environmental education activities and wildlife conservation.
On top of this, we supported the 昀椀rst student to enrol on a university
course through the ‘Siska Scholarship’. Mahda had attended the BNF-run Anak Sebangau nature club
for nine years and shows real leadership potential. Through completing a degree in management at
Universitas Muhammadiyah Palangkaraya, alongside continued capacity building and professional
development with the nature club, the hope is that Maghda will grow into a future conservation leader.
