Our Contribution
to Conservation
In 2025, 78% of our income came from our zoo visitors and we are sincerely grateful for your support.
The remainder came from external funders, legacies, donations and university supporters, an area that
we hope in the future to increase our charitable income through. Of our 2025 expenditure, we spent 25%
on direct conservation, 16% on indirect conservation, and 59% on mission driven operations.
We follow the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s de昀椀nition of conservation as:
“The protection, care, management and maintenance of ecosystems,
habitats, wildlife species and populations, within or outside of their
natural environments, in order to safeguard the natural conditions for
their long-term performance.”
Therefore, to categorise our expenditure we de昀椀ne “Direct Conservation” as the costs associated with all
our in situ 昀椀eld conservation activities, a proportion of our conservation science budget, plus the costs
(husbandry, veterinary, enclosure maintenance, utilities, sta昀昀 support) associated with caring for the 65%
of our species that have a direct conservation role as part of their European conservation programme
(EEP). Through careful species planning, the proportion of our species with a direct conservation role, has
increased from 43% in 2023, to 51% in 2024, to 65% in 2025.
Our “Indirect Conservation” is de昀椀ned as all
the costs associated with our conservation
education activities, a proportion of our
conservation science budget, plus the
costs (husbandry, veterinary, enclosure
maintenance, utilities, sta昀昀 support)
associated with caring for the remaining
35% of our zoo species.
Finally, our “Mission Driven Operations”
re昀氀ect the remaining costs of running our
charity zoo, including marketing, 昀椀nance,
operations, and visitor services.
